On the north side of Lake Chapala rests the scenic town that bears its namesake, Chapala. Briefly serving as a home for American playwright Tennessee Williams, the town acted as a private sanctuary where he wrote an early draft of "A Streetcar Named Desire." A popular destination for tourists, the town is well known for its mariachi music and features a worldwide mariachi festival each year that hosts international and national performers.
