About Heidelberg

This romantic town set against wooded hills along the Neckar River is one of Germany’s most alluring. Heidelberg is home to Germany’s first university and its library, founded in 1421, is the oldest existing public library in the country. Its baroque Altstadt (Old Town) is a red-roofed fairytale setting crowned by the Renaissance red-sandstone Heidelberg Castle. Head for the hills across the Neckar River from the Altstadt to Philosophenweg (Philosopher’s Way) for the most panoramic views in town, including of the castle.
