Most of this Hawaiian community consists of the 22,000-acre Kapalua Resort and its two golf courses that are owned by the Maui Land and Pineapple Co. Kapalua is located near the West Maui Mountains and was known as Honolua Ranch and Honolua Plantation during the 1800s. The Kapalua name is said to be roughly translated into "arms hugging the sea" in Hawaiian. Kapalua Resort's Plantation Golf Course hosts the PGA Hyundai Tournament of Champions every year.
