This cultural mecca is the birthplace of Wagner. Leipzig is also home to the Thomanerchor, a boys’ choir founded more than 800 years ago that was once directed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Leipzig, aka the “City of Heroes,” was at the forefront of a peaceful revolution in 1989 protesting against the Communist regime of former East Germany. Today’s Leipzig is a blend of the modern and the new, where skyscrapers mingle with a classic German Altstadt (Old Town). Not to be missed is the Stasi Museum, located in the former headquarters of the East German secret police (the Stasi).
