About Mather Point

This lookout point at Grand Canyon National Park is often the first view visitors get of the spectacular canyon because it's nearest to the park's south entrance. Mather Point has two overlook platforms with protective railings on protruding rocks as well as an amphitheater for special programs. The Colorado River, Garden Creek, Vishnu Temple, Temple of Zoroaster, Bright Angel Trail, Pipe Creel and O'Neill Butte can be seen from this popular spot.

Grand Canyon National Park

This 1,904-square-mile national park established in 1919 spotlights the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon - one of "The Seven Wonders of the Natural World" and nearly 2,000 million years old. Grand Canyon National Park consists of the natural wonder's North, East and South Rim with the latter attracting the majority of the tourists with its viewpoints, lodgings, services and activities. Mule rides are a popular activity and should be booked well in advance. The park is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site and was featured on the 2010 "America the Beautiful" quarter collection. Points of interest are the Grand Canyon Visitor's Center, Grand Canyon Village, Desert View Drive, Hermit Road, Yavapai Museum of Geology and Phantom Ranch. Almost five million people visit the Grand Canyon per year. Its West Rim is maintained and operated by the Hualapai Native American Tribe.
