About San Martin Plaza

Resting in the Retiro neighborhood of Buenos Aires, San Martin Plaza was originally known as the "Fields of Glory" as it was the sight of the Argentinean army's victory over British invasion in 1807. The land was later renamed in honor of the great South American General Jose de San Martin on the 100th anniversary of his birthday in 1878. French landscape architect Carlos Thays was commissioned to design the plaza as a pleasant green space within the city and also added a sculpture of General San Martin to honor him.
