Originally built around an oasis, the Chilean town of San Pedro de Atacama has grown atop a high plateau to accommodate hikers and tourists wishing to visit the fascinating region. From here many travel throughout the Atacama Desert to visit the stunning Salar de Atacama salt flats and the Valley of the moon. At 7,900 feet, visitors are advised to acclimated to the raised altitude to avoid altitude sickness.
