Nearly 125 square miles of mountains, valleys and plateaus are covered with limestone in this region of County Clare that is one of Ireland's top attractions. The Burren, which has been made into a national park, is said to have formed from fossils and seashells nearly 350 million years ago when the ocean covered the area. Its name “Burren” is derived from the Irish word "Boireann" translated to rocky place.The region is noted for its wide variety of plants and animals.
