A World Heritage Site since 2004 and a major national park in Iceland, Thingvellir is one of the key attractions on the Golden Circle tourist route, alongside Gullfoss Waterfall and Haukadalur Valley. Many of the faults and fissures throughout the region have formed from unique tectonic and volcanic activity. The largest natural lake in Iceland, Thingvallavatn, is found here, and a number of the fissures are full of clear water. The most famous, Peningagjá, is known as "Coin Fissure" for the tradition of dropping coins into it, which are still visible today.
