The Neo-classical style circular monument situated along the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. honors the third United States president and one of the country's Founding Fathers. The Thomas Jefferson Memorial was designed by John Russell Pope to resemble the Roman Pantheon and built between 1939-43 with a 19-foot statue of Jefferson by Rudulph Evans added in 1947. Inscriptions on the memorial's inside walls include lines from the 1776 Declaration of Independence, 1777 A Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom and an 1800 letter about not having a state religion. The landmark is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
